Copper Canyon Lodge

Copper Canyon Lodge is a gorgeous inn for visitors to the Black Hills region interested in visiting sites such as
Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, and Rapid City, South Dakota.
Finding those out of the paradigm places to stay makes traveling an adventure.  Recently, while on a film shoot for a documentary in the Black Hills of South Dakota, I happened across the most peaceful and refreshing place to rest my bones at the end of a long day and a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the highway and tourist crowds - Copper Canyon Lodge.

Nestled in the hills just west of Rapid City, the lodge, which sleeps sixteen people, is built in the shadow of a 200 foot tall rock bluff carved out of the mountain by a picture perfect mountain stream.  Flowing along the canyon base, the creek sets the tone for relaxation as it babbles over rocks.  Combine that with the cool breeze rustling gently through the mountain forest, and you have the perfect equation for a serene getaway.

The breathtaking lodge, crafted of logs, sits amid wooded  pastureland made even more picturesque by the horses who graze there.  It is a grand place to host a special event.  What bride wouldn't look radiant surrounded by such scenery?  There is more than an abundance of room for large gatherings such as family reunions.  Corporate retreats might be even more productive in such a setting.

As for myself, and my small film crew, we chose to stay in the detached bunkhouse located a stone's throw from the lodge.  It's open floor plan can accommodate six people very comfortably.  At the end of a long day in the sun wagging camera equipment, we found peace and comfort with all the modern conveniences on which we are so dependent.  The bunkhouse provided us a kitchenette, bathroom facilities, and, yes, we had satellite television, too.   We found the comfy couch, love seat, and rocker perfect for unwinding at the end of the day.

Meeting the owners of the lodge, Wally and Ruth Ann Jensen, was like a reunion of old friends.  Being from the South, I take great pride in Southern hospitality.  I can honestly say, the South  has nothing on Ruth Ann and Wally.  They greeted us, accommodated our every wish and need, and even treated us with tasty salt water taffy.  And before I forget, I need to mention the bed was absolutely like sleeping on a cloud, not one uncomfortable moment.

The lodge had already hosted fourteen weddings this season  It has been featured on the cover of Black Hills Bride.  It is near Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Memorial, as well as lakes and ski resorts.  It is only a short drive for the nightlife of Deadwood.

North of the bunkhouse at Copper Canyon, guests can see a picture perfect pasture.  Copper Canyon
makes for a beautiful and relaxing home away from home.

Overall Copper Canyon is a wonderful pick.  If you're looking for a secluded getaway that is still close to all of the major tourist attractions, make Copper Canyon Lodge your next reservation.
